Airfield is a hand-tufted reinterpretation of Astrid Sampe’s classic rug from the 1950s in wool and linen. Astrid Sampe had a predilection for modern architecture and concrete art. She felt that a new kind of textile was needed for the modern high-rise buildings that had gone up after the war in cities worldwide, including in Sweden. Modern furniture was there; the rugs should be modern as well. Astrid Sampe was on her way to the airport when she was inspired to create the Airfield rug. The rug embodies the feel of an airport’s black asphalt, brown earth, puddles and glittering rain, and the white-streaked brake tracks from the landing. AIRFIELD
